Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Smooth Military Move.

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is an official relocation of an active-duty service member – and their family – to a different duty station. Whether it’s your first PCS or your fifth, the process can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve broken it down into clear, manageable steps to help you prepare, organize, and move with confidence.

What Is a PCS Move?

A PCS move is more than just a transfer. It includes a host of benefits, entitlements, and responsibilities, all governed by the Department of Defense. PCS orders are issued when you’re required to relocate to a new duty station for 20 weeks or more. This can be within the continental U.S. (CONUS) or overseas (OCONUS).

PCS Process Overview

1. Receive Your Orders

Once you receive your PCS orders, review them carefully. These are your official marching papers and include key information like your report date, new duty station, and authorization for travel and shipment of household goods.

Tip: Don’t wait—start planning immediately. Early preparation reduces stress and gives you more control.

2. Contact Your Installation Transportation Office

Your first stop should be the Transportation Office or Personal Property Office at your current base. They will help you:

Schedule your move
Arrange for household goods shipment
Understand your entitlements
Coordinate with the Defense Personal Property System (DPS)

3. Choose Your Move Type

You’ll have a few options depending on your situation:

Government-Arranged Move: The military hires movers and handles logistics.
Personally Procured Move (PPM): You organize and complete the move yourself and may receive reimbursement.
Combination Move: A mix of both government and personal arrangements.

4. Schedule and Prepare Your Move

Plan early—especially during peak PCS season (May–August). Key tasks include:

Scheduling pick-up/drop-off dates for household goods
Inventorying and preparing your belongings
Arranging temporary lodging and travel plans
Notifying your landlord or selling your home (if applicable)
Determine where you will live in your new location – whether that will be on-base housing, renting a home, or purchasing a home

5. Travel to Your New Duty Station

Depending on your orders, you may be reimbursed for:

Mileage and per diem
Temporary lodging
Transportation of dependents
Make sure to keep all receipts and travel documentation for reimbursement.

6. Check In at Your New Duty Station

Once you arrive:

Check-in at your new unit
Complete your travel voucher (DD Form 1351-2)
Schedule delivery of your household goods
Begin the in-processing procedure
